Alberta Reclamation and Remediation

  • Ark Envirotech Offers Services to Address the Following Remediation Issues:
  • Spill Response
  • Soil and Ground Water Contamination

Spill Response

Ark has developed a reliable method for spill response over the 10 years we have been serving the Oil and Gas Industry.

  • The response plan includes the following steps:
  • Respond to spill site, assess situation, advise on actions required
  • Sample area and determine degree of contamination
  • Make and implement remediation plan

Soil and Groundwater Contamination

Addressing this kind of contamination involves the following action:

Phase II ESA

  • Assess Current spill sites or sites damaged in the past.
  • Develop remediation plan from current information.
  • Select the lowest cost method applicable in the situation.

Phase III ESA

  • implement the remediation plan

Reclamation

  • Ark Envirotech Offers the Following Reclamation Services:
  • Facilities Reclamation
  • Wellsite Reclamation
  • Pits and Ponds Reclamation
  • Pipeline Reclamation and Application

Facilities

Good planning reduces costs. Reclamation of the subsurface requires investigation of soil and groundwater conditions followed by a plan that combines good techniques and control of costs. Once an effective plan is developed and agreed to by client management, the reclamation can be accomplished efficiently.

  • Some activities involved in the planning are:
  • Facilities Reclamation Application - must be completed and submitted to Alberta Environment
  • Review of the activities that have taken place at the facility, past and present
  • Advise Landowner of planned reclamation
  • Spill reports review, past environmental reports review
  • Determine if Natural Attenuation of contaminants is an option for the site

Wellsite

Ark provides the project management and field services to conduct the reclamation of wellsites, access roads, pipelines, and plant sites. After the site is restored to Alberta Environment standards, we complete a reclamation application and certify the site has been properly reclaimed.

Flare Pits and Ponds

According to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) flare pits present a significant risk of contamination due to dumping and disposal of waste fluids. (IL 96-04 EUB Policy Update and clarification On The Use Of Earthen Pits)

There is pressure to conduct timely remediation of flare pits. Ark regularly oversees such projects.

  • Here are some of the steps involved in pit and pond remediation:
  • Create a sample plan using interviews and historical data
  • Sample the flare pit, field test for pH, salinity (chlorides) metals, chemicals, and hydrocarbons, and submit samples to laboratory
  • Review of laboratory analysis and comparison to reclamation criteria
  • If soil and/or water are found to exceed criteria, in-situ treatment, removal or a combination will be required
  • Re-contour site, spread topsoil evenly over disturbed area, and re-seed

Pipelines - Pipeline Conservation & Reclamation Application

Prior to starting the construction of all Class 1 pipelines, a Conservation and Reclamation Application must be completed, and submitted to Alberta Environment.

  • The application addresses issues such as:
  • Route Selection - Ensure the route chosen will minimize environmental impact
  • Scheduling and Timing - Ensure scheduling occurs during times of the least environmental impact
  • Topsoil Salvage - Complete a soil and vegetation (including weeds) inventory (pre-site), soil must be checked to below the upper subsoil, compete recommendations for proper handling during grading, trenching, lowering in, and backfilling
  • Water Crossings - Select proper crossing methods for vehicles and pipeline. Obtain a Water Resources Permit and the Navigable Water Protection Act Permit, the approval of Fish and Wildlife Services and the Water Resources Administration Division. Prepare contingency plans for fuel and hazardous waste spills, stream bank erosion, storm runoff, and river floods. Check for and remove all aquatic or riparian noxious weeds
  • Spills and Contaminants - Provide contingency plan for land spills

This list shows only a sample of the information integral to this application.
