Alberta Surface Casing Vent Flow Measurement (SCVF)

SCVF and Gas Migration Reports

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) is placing a greater responsibility on the oil and gas industry for reporting, testing, and eliminating Surface Casing Vent Flow / Gas Migration problems. The EUB must be notified within 30 days of initial detection of a vent flow or gas migration. If audited, the licensee must submit the SCVF/GM Data sheet within 10 days.

Ark oversees the screening tests for Surface Casing Vent Flow, provide the necessary report for your files, and submit copies to EUB. Ark then follows up with the required flow measurement reports.

The EUB has set out the following criteria (Oil & Gas Regulation) for testing:

  • Surface Casing Vent Flow
  • Vents must have a minimum diameter of 50mm, extend 60cm above ground level and terminate so any flow is directed either downward or parallel to the ground.
  • Within 90 days of rig release, licensees must test new wells for a vent flow.
  • Reports must be kept on file for the life of the well.
  • Gas Migration
  • Should only be completed in summer months (June 15 - October 31).
  • Within 90 days of rig release, licensees must test new wells for gas migration problems in Townships 45-52, Ranges 1-9, W4M (it is recommended for all other wells outside the problem region).
